Although luxury automakers generally supply vehicles that are more expensive than non-luxury brands, they still create entry points affordable enough for customers to enjoy what they have to offer. The C 300 and IS – which are both compact sedans and come from Mercedes-Benz and Lexus, respectively – are examples of entry-level premium vehicles. And for 2018, each sedan gets a host of enhancements to make them more attractive to potential buyers. While both are formidable small luxury cars, the C 300 wins the head-to-head battle based on the following factors:

Fuel Efficiency

Both rear-wheel-drive vehicles, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz C 300 and the 2018 Lexus IS are powered by turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engines. The C 300’s I4 is glued to a nine-speed automatic transmission while the one on the IS is pinned to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The powertrain and drivetrain configuration on the C 300 results in a fuel economy that consists of 24 mpg* in the city and 33 mpg* on the highway. On the IS, fuel efficiency is measured at 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway*; that’s two less mpg in city fuel efficiency and one less mpg in highway fuel efficiency than its Mercedes-Benz counterpart.

Transmission

The aforementioned nine-speed automatic transmission is new on the Mercedes-Benz C 300 for the 2018 model year. The relatively high number of gears means that there are more options for optimal operation. When the C 300 needs to accelerate to deliver peak power, it has more chances to do so as it shifts from one gear to another. Also, because of the number of gears, there’s less space to cover between them, thus reducing shift shock and consequently providing a smoother driving experience. By comparison, the 2018 Lexus IS comes with a standard eight-speed automatic transmission, which means that it has one less gear than that of the Mercedes-Benz.
