Some customers want to buy affordable vehicles that give them a lot more bang for their bucks, and small luxury cars fulfill that need perfectly. Since the 1990s, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Audi A4 have been two of the premier entries in this segment, paying most attention to performance, comfort, and a plethora of tech features. For the 2017 model year, Mercedes-Benz introduces a string of cabriolet (convertible) models for the C-Class, while the A4 is completely redesigned—with more power, enhanced fuel efficiency, and lots of new tech and safety components. Despite the new A4 model, the C-Class still stands firm in 2017, and even surpasses its Audi counterpart in three areas.

Over the past couple of years, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class has built and solidified its reputation for offering a healthy list of engine choices. And the 2017 iteration is no different. For the most powerful version of the C-Class, go for the performance-optimized AMG® C-Class C 63 S four-door sedan. Installed at the front of the vehicle is a handcrafted 4.0-liter bi-turbocharged V8 engine that blurts out 503 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. Hitched to a 7-speed multi-clutch transmission, the V8 helps the AMG® C-Class C 63 S to go from 0 to 60 mph in a blistering fast 3.9 seconds. Regarding the A4, Audi is content with fitting its ride with a 2.0-liter TSFI inline 4-cylinder engine, which is decidedly smaller and less powerful. Its output is measured at 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, which is far from the peak of the C-Class. Plus, the A4’s TSFI has a much slower 0-to-60 mph time, at up to 5.7 seconds.

Another main attribute of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is its ride quality. Automotive experts cite the newest C-Class as one of the segment’s top picks for a smooth, soft ride. Whether you are on a highway, a dense area, or even away from civilization, the 2017 C-Class never compromises on shielding you from turbulence when driving. The AMG® models in particular are renowned for their sharper responses to steering, so you can choose any of them for increased composure around corners. And thanks to the car’s four drive modes, you can even make the drive smoother – or sportier, if you so prefer. While the 2017 Audi A4 can offer smoothness, it does not come close to the cruiser-like feel of the C-Class.

The aforementioned 7-speed automatic gearbox on the new C-Class—dubbed the “7G-Tronic”—is highly acclaimed for its quick response and efficiency, in addition to its contribution to ensuring a smooth ride. The 7G-Tronic comes with two overdrive ratios, which enhance highway fuel efficiency, and its adaptive logic paces automatic shifting to match your driving style. The transmission also comes with shift paddles on the wheels, so that you can enjoy manual control anytime and at your greatest convenience. The new A4 also has a 7-speed automatic transmission. However, critics generally note that it can be finicky; sometimes it hesitates when the driver needs more power.
